Tips for playing 5 card
5 card draw may seem like a simple game, but it can be profitable too. While playing it, take note of your opponents, and keep a sharp-look out on playing patterns.
Hand selection is an important strategy tip. If there are four other players at the table and a hand is dealt to you such as AK495 and there is no flush draw, it is better to fold. It all depends on the number of players in the hand, but don’t call the blind without having a draw or a pair, even at the small blind.
Position is vital in 5 card draw. If you get something like 2249Q in an early position, it would be probably better to fold when there are more players then one or two. It might be a good move to call when no one raises and you are in a late position. A lot of pre draw raising happens in 5 card draw, so avoid calling with a weak hand; the person sitting next to you might raise you.
In 5 card draw, a great thing is that you are able to see how many cards are drawn by each player. This tells you a lot about the player’s hand. 5 card draw is a card game consisting of pairs – 2 pairs, three of a kind, an occasional higher hand. You will see a player mostly drawing three cards, which signifying that he has a pair. In case a player has raised before a draw and then draws three cards, you can safely assume a high pair in his hand. This also applies to a player who raises and then takes one card. There are likely to be three scenarios when a player does this:
# he has two pair
# he has a flush/straight draw and is bluffing
# he is trying to hide three of a kind and so is keeping the extra card
A player raising before draw and then drawing only two cards can mean one of two things:
# he has three of a kind
# he has a pair and getting an ace or a high card with his pair
There are various ways in which you can bluff your opponents and make them think you have less/more than you do. Very often some player will raise before draw and then draw zero cards. So most people will assume he has a flush/straight and fold. These are pretty risky tactics, but there is no harm in trying to throw other players off one’s playing style.
